Leadership

DR. DONALD DEHAYES has held leadership positions in flagship public research universities for twenty-six years. In 2021, he stepped down as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at The University of Rhode Island (URI) after fourteen years. He is currently Provost emeritus at URI and Dean emeritus of the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at The University of Vermont (UVM). His scientific career as a forest biologist and ecosystem ecologist inspired the field guide format for this book.

He has served as President of the National Association of University Forest Resources Programs, a Trustee of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, and Commissioner of the New England Commission on Higher Education. He is currently on the board of the Rhode Island Natural History Survey.

At UVM, he was honored with the Kroepsch-Maurice Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching, the University Scholar Award recognizing excellence in research, and the endowed Donald DeHayes Multicultural Scholarship Fund for his sustained contributions to diversity. The Donald DeHayes Provost Honors Excellence Endowment at URI celebrates academic achievement. A staunch advocate for higher education, he is dedicated to leadership development, ecosystem thinking, and interdisciplinary learning and discovery to advance the human condition
